Warsaw, Poland. December 17, 2009. Assembly of the Resistance. Putting aside intense partisan disputes, the two leading Polish political parties, the Civic Platform and the Law and Justice Party announced the adoption of 90 Cuban political prisoners by 90 Members of Parliament from both parties in a press conference held Thursday at the Sejm, or Polish Parliament. The announcement marked out common ground for the two parties at a time of fierce pre-election campaigning. A delegation from the Assembly of the Resistance, a united front of over 50 Cuban pro-democracy organizations based both in Cuba and abroad, was present during the conference. The Assembly’s official reception at Poland’s Presidential Palace earlier this week has generated widespread coverage in the Polish media.

Two leading figures of the Polish Sejm led the conference: Adam Lipinski, leader of the Law and Justice Party parliamentary bloc, and Andrzej Halicki, Chairman of the Sejm’s powerful Foreign Relations Committee and leader of the governing Civic Platform.

"We are committed to the human rights of the Cuban people, which we will defend at the European level,” stated Lipinski, who was himself a leader of the Solidarity movement during the martial law years in Communist-ruled Poland. He described the adoptions as “a show of support for Cubans in the struggle.”

Andrzej Halicki, also a former leader of the Solidarity movement, made extensive remarks condemning repression by the Castro regime and expressing solidarity with Cuban political prisoners.

"The Polish experience demonstrates to us that when a regime must engage in repression, as is the case with the Castro regime, it is because that regime is not strong. It uses repression when it is weak," stated Halicki.

This Christmas initiative by Polish Members of Parliament takes place at a time when repression is taking a heavy toll in Cuba, with dozens of arrests across the Island. Former Cuban political prisoner Húber Matos thanked Poland for the gesture of solidarity with those in prison and went on to state that repression has increased because the Cuban people have increased their actions of civic resistance against the regime.

Each Member of Parliament will advocate for the release of the adopted prisoner both in Polish and international settings. Additionally, the Members of Parliament will be in contact with the families of the 90 Cuban political prisoners to offer them moral support.

"Never before have so many Cuban political prisoners been adopted at the same time by a national parliament. This is truly a Christmas gift to the Cuban people,” stated Orlando Gutiérrez-Boronat, from the Cuban Democratic Directorate, who speak in the name of the Assembly of the Resistance delegation during the press conference.

The Assembly of the Cuban Resistance delegation included Sylvia Iriondo and Anolan Ponce from Mothers and Women Against Repression (MAR por Cuba), Calixto Navarro y Orlando Gutiérrez from the Cuban Democratic Directorate and Huber Matos Benítez from Independent and Democratic Cuba.

La novela ‘Boring Home’, galardonada con el Premio Novelas de Gaveta Franz Kafka. Orlando Luis Pardo Lazo

Una obra del escritor cubano Orlando Luis Pardo Lazo ha sido la ganadora en la segunda edición del concurso Novelas de Gaveta Franz Kafka. Una iniciativa literaria que se celebra en República Checa y que está destinada a ayudar a los escritores cubanos a publicar sus obras debido a los problemas de difusión que pueden encontrar en Cuba.

Orlando Luis Pardo Lazo, escritor, periodista y fotógrafo cubano, ha sido galardonado con el premio Novela de Gaveta Franz Kafka de este año gracias a su obra ‘Boring Home’ (Hogar Aburrido). Este certamen literario está destinado a apoyar a escritores cubanos que no pueden publicar en la isla, ya que el gobierno de La Habana les impide lanzar sus obras por no pertenecer a las organizaciones oficialistas dedicadas a la literatura. Por este motivo, son muchos los autores que escriben sus novelas y las guardan en una gaveta a la espera de una oportunidad para que vean la luz.

Los tres requisitos para participar en el concurso son: que las obras presentadas sean novelas; que no hayan sido publicadas anteriormente; y que los autores residan en Cuba. Dita Grubnerova, coordinadora del certamen, explica la esencia de la creación de esta iniciativa. “Nosotros les mostramos que tiene sentido escribir, pensar de la manera que quieran pensar, que no tienen que estar encerrados solamente al margen del régimen que tienen y que después van a tener acceso a la información de nuevo. Esa es básicamente la idea del proyecto.”

La novela ganadora este año, ‘Boring Home’, es un conjunto de ensayos sobre observaciones cotidianas de la vida en Cuba, de su historia, de su gente. En la presentación del libro la semana pasada en Praga se leyó un pequeño fragmento de la obra dedicado a la literatura cubana, con numerosas referencias a literatura prohibida en la isla de autores como Reinaldo Arenas o Cabrera Infante.

Gracias al concurso Novelas de Gaveta, ‘Boring Home’ ha conseguido llegar finalmente al papel. Curiosamente, el autor intentó publicar la novela anteriormente en Cuba, pero su libro fue censurado y no lo consiguió. Dita Grubnerova relata las sensaciones que les transmitió el autor premiado, Orlando Luis Pardo Lazo.

“Su sensacion o sus sentimientos son de una satisfacción muy grande para él. Era un libro que estaba a punto de publicarse en Cuba y en el último momento se canceló todo. Para él es como una victoria moral, realmente poder sacar un libro y ahora poder verlo en vivo, tenerlo realmente. Son muy agradecidos, porque ni soñaban con la posibilidad de que se publique su libro.”

La organización del concurso la comparten la Biblioteca de Libros Prohibidos de Praga, el Movimiento de Bibliotecas Independientes de Cuba, la Biblioteca Nacional Checa y la editorial checa Garamond, junto con el apoyo de la Universidad de Jackson State, en Estados Unidos. Todos ellos son los artífices de que ‘Boring Home’ vea la luz. La editorial tiene prevista la publicación de 1.000 ejemplares. Aunque no están destinados a la venta, sino que la idea es enviarlos a Cuba y que puedan difundirse de forma gratuita.
